چکیده

It was just fifty years ago that Robert Koch made the epoch-making discovery of the tubercle bacillus as the cause of tuberculosis. The first announcement of this discovery was made by him in March 1882 before a meeting of the Physiological Society of Berlin and the modern era of tuberculosis may be said to begin from that date. Before this discovery tuberculosis was believed to be due to some defect in the constitution of the individual?1 habitus phthisicus' of Hippocrates. When Koch made the important discovery, he believed that the bacilli causing the disease in man and animals were identical. It is rather

The Open Case in Relation to the Control of Tuberculosis

The modern concept of the spread of tuberculosis from an open case to a susceptible person dates back to pre-Koch times. Hippocrates, Sylvius and others recognized the infectious nature of tuberculosis long before Koch discovered the tubercle bacillus, but their understanding of the nature of infection was at best vague. Koch's discovery gave point to the infectious nature of the disease. In hi...

The year 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of Robert Koch's Nobel Prize. Here, we describe the scientific career of Robert Koch, the discoverer of the etiologic agent of tuberculosis but also of those of anthrax, cholera and wound infections. Equally important, Koch developed the methodologies and concepts that made medical microbiology a scientific discipline. Despite great efforts, however, Ko...

Koch's postulates, carnivorous cows, and tuberculosis today.

With Koch's announcement in 1882 of his work with the tubercle bacillus, his famous postulates launched the rational world of infectious disease and an abrupt social change--strict patient isolation. The postulates, so successful at their inception, soon began to show some problems, particularly with cholera, which clearly violated some of Koch's requirements. Subsequent studies of other diseas...

The Chemistry of the Proteins of the Acid-fast Bacilli.

The protein components of bacteria are in most cases of great biological significance, and an understanding of their chemical compositions and properties is one of the pressing problems in bacteriological chemistry. There is reason to expect that such knowledge will be of value in throwing light on the organisms themselves and perhaps also on some of the biological reactions that they elicit. O...
